What We’re Looking For:

Iridium is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of skilled engineers developing a state-of-the-art satellite ground system and user equipment for the company’s satellite-based position, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. In this role, you will provide strategic and operational leadership in the design and architecture for PNT software products. If you are confident in your abilities to foster a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement and are excited about the opportunity to develop new systems based on a unique and patented space-based technology, the we want to talk to you!

What You’ll Do:

  • Foster and role model a culture of innovation, accountability, and technical excellence
  • Mentor, train, and develop your team by performing regular check-ins, discussing career growth opportunities, giving constructive feedback, and managing conflict when necessary
  • Lead recuiting efforts to ensure that the PNT Engineering team has the proper development skills
  • Perform as a senior contributor for the design and architecture for PNT software products
  • Interface with R&D groups to understand and advance the product architecture
  • Become the team’s subject matter expertise in the Receiver product and product architecture
  • Develop and maintain the receiver product knowledge base and technical onboarding artifacts
  • Work with Product Management leads to establish well-defined feature scope
  • Own the Receiver product deliveries ensuring that we deliver on time and on budget
  • Function as a technical lead and subject matter expert, collaborating with other leads and SMEs, to develop the product backlog
  • Work with development staff to ensure they understand their assignments and are able to start each sprint effectively
  • Work with Product Leads to properly decompose user stories into detailed level tasking with the development team
  • Perform development, unit testing, and integration activities
  • Serve as a model for software quality and best-practices
  • Work directly with internal and external customers
  • Work in a dynamic team-oriented environment using agile methodologies
  • Drive the continuous efforts to develop software development processes

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 10+ years’ experience developing software applications
  • Previous management experience required, including leading and encouraging self-directed teams
  • 8+ years experience with Linux
  • 8+ years experience with modern programming languages, including C/C++ and Python
  • Experience with modern software architecture principles, including micro-service development
  • Experience with unit testing
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases
  • Practitioner of continuous integration and GIT
  • Capable of being a strong motivator and source of direction for your team and role modelling commitment to your team’s goals
  • Have a people-oriented mentality and be able to build meaningful relationships with senior leadership on your team and in other departments
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey products, deliverables, analyses, and/or issues clearly and confidently, and recognize and adapt to different communication techniques
  • Be able to analyze and understand a situation or problem and think critically to make decisions, come up with and evaluate unique solutions, and see those solutions through to completion
  • Be independent and self-motivated and demonstrate a high degree of creativity, flexibility, and resourcefulness
  • Have a strong sense of urgency in driving projects to completion and be motivated to achieve outcomes and results
  • Can thrive in a dynamic environment and efficiently manage multiple or complex projects while continuously looking for new and enhanced ways of doing things

We’ll also need you to:

  • This position directly performs under, supports, or is exposed to a U.S. government contract. To comply with the requirements of that U.S. government contract, applicants for this position must be U.S. citizens
  • Be able to travel up to 10%

Work Environment:

This position primarily works in an office setting and is largely sedentary with the majority of the position working with a computer. The role typically requires the use of basic office equipment such as a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
