Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

The Iridium Internship Program is an opportunity for students to be a part of the Iridium teams shaping the future of satellite communications. As an Intern, you’ll begin making an impact on real projects from day one! Come prepared to grow, develop, and learn alongside a team and the leaders of our company. The Iridium Internship program is a 12-week program that runs from May 27, 2025 to August 15, 2025. During the program, interns will have the opportunity to provide valuable support to an Iridium department on a project or important work assignment. Interns will also be provided an opportunity to engage with senior leadership and fellow interns via regular engagement activities. Interns will participate in an end of internship presentation, where we ask them to reflect on their summer internships and present a summary of what they have learned and accomplished.

 

What We’re Looking For:

A Satellite Operations Intern will join our team of engineers providing mission critical ground and satellite operations support for the Iridium Satellite Operations Center’s real-time team including developing, testing and assisting with implementing processes, procedures, checklists, and software applications.  In this role, you’ll gain valuable experience and knowledge while working in a dynamic environment that requires new and innovative tools to solve and provide insight to complex scenarios, while maintaining the mission for our customers. The development projects will encompass a broad range of skills, ranging from small scripts to assisting with larger scale software applications.  Working in this role, you’ll gain valuable experience performing anomaly and issue resolution, troubleshooting, and identifying root cause and determining corrective actions. You will thrive/succeed in this role if you enjoy learning in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Identify and assist with implementing ideas, solutions, processes, procedures, and checklists focused on continuous process improvement, more efficient operations, and reduced service impacts
  • Aid in the development of existing operational tools and software in order to provide streamlined, automated, and mechanized satellite ground operations
  • Track, trend, and analyze potential problems & anomalous conditions that may affect the ground system, hardware, software, operational LANs, and satellites
  • Investigate and assist in resolving issues where situations require an in-depth evaluation of factors that have been discovered or referred by operations crews
  • Provide support, real-time investigation, and troubleshooting for operations

Skills You’ll Obtain:

  • Real-world experience in chosen field of interest and related topics through multiple hands-on projects
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Linux operating system experience
  • Full software development lifecycle experience

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Experience in one or more programming languages (Python, Java, Javascript and Shell scripting)
  • Interest and ability in learning new technologies
  • Background in troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and professional demeanor
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Desire to learn and willingness to be trained

Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

Things You Must Bring to the Table:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Must be currently enrolled in a bachelors or graduate degree program at an accredited academic institution
  • Must be working towards a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or related technical discipline
  • US Citizenship is required
  • Must be able to work in-person
