Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

If you have 10+ years experience in the aerospace industry, specifically associated with the development and operation of complex communications satellite systems then you will be excited about the Principal Engineer opening with Iridium on our Technology Development & Engineering team. As a Principal Engineer, you’ll be responsible for managing multiple activities and projects, including those with cross-functional teams, to oversee and coordinate all software development and test activities ultimately ensuring the Agile development and test processes are followed. You’ll bring enthusiasm about utilizing broad knowledge to deliver products and services and supporting a diverse set of customers.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Work with key stakeholders to understand program needs and interpret the needs into the program scope, plan, and execution
  • Handle Agile software development and software test processes
  • Support project management with the development of required program documentation, such as presentations, schedules, reviews
  • Communicate briefing summaries of project results, issues tracking and reporting to management
  • Develop working relationships with stakeholders and use those relationships to manage the product backlogs
  • Drive development of the test automation tool suite ensuring that all platforms are held to a common standard throughout the company

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in aerospace industry specifically associated with the development and operation of complex communications satellite systems
  • In-depth knowledge of Agile methodologies and processes
  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems and to prioritize and organize complex workflow involving multiple inter-related parallel efforts
  • Demonstrated ability to establish customer and supplier relationships and to understand and resolve technical issues
  • Position requires a hands-on self-starter, capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency with standard office/engineering tools required (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey products, deliverables, analyses, and/or issues clearly and confidently, and recognize and adapt to different communication techniques
  • Can easily build meaningful relationships with others, including senior leadership outside of your own department, and is comfortable providing constructive feedback to your team members and management
  • Be able to analyze a situation or problem, generate effective solutions, and see those solutions through to completion
  • Must possess the creativity and resourcefulness needed to make reliable decisions and determine methods on new assignments
  • Can thrive in a dynamic environment by handling multiple tasks and managing shifting priorities
  • Be proactive in sharing knowledge you’ve learned with others

Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:

  • A strong knowledge of project management
  • Masters degree in Engineering
  • Agile certification

We’ll Also Need You To:

  • Willing and able to travel up to 15 days annually
  • Willing and able to be on-call to support operational issues
  • US Citizenship is required

Work Environment:

This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
