Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

What We’re Looking For:

Iridium is seeking a Senior Database Administrator Lead to join our Network Operations and Development team. As a Senior Database Administrator Lead, you’ll be responsible for identifying and autonomously implementing ideas and solutions, and maintaining advanced system knowledge in MySQL and MSSQL databases and related technologies. Working in this role, you’ll gain valuable experience in prioritization, delegation, team leadership and planning while making a meaningful impact on service delivery. This position requires an active/current Top Secret Security Clearance (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Identify and implement areas for improvement in the gateway database environment
  • Lead, mentor, and serve as escalation point for service interruptions for the gateway computer systems team, creating reports, responding to and remediating events
  • Work with the team to develop, draft and organize documentation of the gateway database environments at IST (Iridium Satellite Tempe), TSC (Technical Support Center), and SNOC (Satellite Network Operations Center)
  • Create reports that meaningfully convey technical information to non-technical decision makers
  • Build relationships with NIC (Network Infrastructure Commercial), enterprise, systems engineering, and gateway engineering teams as well as upper management
  • Conduct Linux administration activities and manage development, test, and production MySQL database
  • Posses the ability to take unstructured record data, automate data insertion, create and manage databases to support user queries
  • Create and model database schemas into models and diagrams of user community
  • Manage and coordinate all commercial database setup and configuration including installation and security configuration
  • Lead multiple infrastructure planning and implementation including instance strategy, technical platform selection, architecture design, backup and recovery strategy
  • Perform regular backup and recovery operations on production database using appropriate tools on Linux system
  • Create development, integration, Quality Assurance (QA), and production databases and configure/setup database monitoring and backup related jobs

Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field OR equivalent relevant experience in lieu of degree
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in the Information Technology (IT) industry
  • Experience with MySQL database administration required
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information to cross-departmental groups or those unfamiliar with the topic
  • The ability to easily build relationships with leadership and colleagues outside of your team
  • An analytical mindset, with the ability to understand a situation or problem and think critically to make decisions and come up with out-of-the-box solutions
  • Proactivity in providing feedback and sharing your knowledge with others
  • The ability to prioritize your own tasks and potentially the tasks of others while making sure deadlines are met

Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:

  • Relevant certification in MySQL database administration, Red Hat OS administration, MS Windows administration (i.e., CompTIA, RHCE, MSCE, F5 etc.)
  • Previous experience working in a telecommunications environment
  • Experience with MSSQL and/or other databases
  • Familiarity with Web development technologies

We’ll also need you to:

  • Be able to travel up to 25%
  • Be on call to support business operations
  • Be a U.S. citizen (due to ITAR restrictions)

 

Work Environment:

This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse and printer. For meetings in person, this position will need to be able stand, walk within the office and climb stairs on occasion.
