Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

What We’re Looking For:

Iridium is seeking a motivated 3GPP Standards System Engineer to join our System Architecture Team and lead integration efforts between Iridium and 4G/5G networks. As a 3GPP Standards Systems Engineer, you’ll work closely with peer system architects and senior management to establish strategic plans and objectives in support of Iridium’s goals in evolving terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. This role will encompass leading efforts to advocate for Iridium in 3GPP standards, as well as driving adoption of 5G technologies within Iridium’s network roadmap. As such, it is a unique opportunity to be at the intersection of satellite and terrestrial networks. You’ll be successful in this role if you enjoy developing a long-term vision and working with cross-functional teams to establish partnerships and coalitions to pursue common goals in the standards bodies and industry.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Analyze options for deploying 3GPP architectures to support our long-term strategic goals
  • Craft proposals to align 3GPP standards and Iridum system architecture roadmaps to benefit from 3GPP standard architectures and commercial components
  • Play a key role in setting standards for new service developments. Act as a standards representative/agent of change within the company
  • Represent Iridium in standards meetings and contribute to standards relevant to Iridium’s business
  • Manage competing constraints for both long-term goals and operational requirements when architecting solutions
  • Provides subject matter expertise to ensure standards options are well communicated and well documented to ensure the system architecture is supportable within the approved standards

Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field OR equivalent relevant experience in lieu of degree
  • 12+ years of relevant experience in developing cellular solutions according to the 3GPP standards and working in standards forums
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present information, drive discussion, and respond to difficult scenarios with limited preparation across all employee groups
  • Skilled in 5G, 5G NTN and 5G NB-IOT standards and network deployments
  • The ability to build productive relationships with all levels of leadership and promote collaboration across multiple departments, with the ability to convey abstract, complex concepts clearly, simply and confidently
  • Be able to think on your feet to respond to difficult situations and resolve issues, including being able to generate compelling architectural options, and support a team decision process to balance long-term goals with short-term constraints and operational concerns
  • Must possess good judgement and decisiveness
  • Skilled at managing multiple priorities while ensuring that work is of high quality
  • Must be proactive in seeking out knowledge and sharing what you’ve learned with others
  • Work effectively with diverse teams across the business
  • Act as a business partner and collaborate to align others to implement our standards goal
  • Fluency in security best practices for 5G solutions

Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:

  • Experience in translating standards into products and solutions
  • Experience with 3GPP roaming integration with MVNOs

We’ll also need you to:

  • Be able to travel up to 15% to 3GPP plenary sessions and meeting with vendors
  • US Citizenship required

Work Environment:

This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse and printer. For in-person meetings, this position will need to be able stand, walk within the office and climb stairs on occasion.
